hair care: dark vs. light

brunette-blondeSince venturing over from the dark side to the blonde side recently, I have entered a whole new world of hair care. Aside from one, ok two, ill-advised adventures with cap highlights back in high school, I have always been a brunette. I’ve never really had to give a whole lot of thought to the sorts of hair products I use, especially not my shampoo and conditioner. I have quickly learned that it is a whole new ball game when blonde. First there is purple shampoo, which is imperative, but cannot be overused, and then there are the highlight enhancing conditioning treatments and the blonde tinted dry shampoo. It’s all very dramatic.

There are some key products for the brunettes out there too (shampoos with sulphates will dull your shiny chocolate locks in no time)… Here are some of my favourite hair care items for both the blondes and the brunettes out there…

John Frieda’s line Sheer Blonde has a wide range of products for those rocking a lighter hue. The Color Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo & Conditioner are a vivid shades of purple and help to neutralizethose brassy yellow tones that all blondes try their best to avoid. It shouldn’t be overused though, otherwise you will find your goldie locks looking a little bit ashy, or even grey.

John Frieda’s Highlight Activating Enhancing Shampoo & Conditioner (not pictured) are great to use on a more regular basis.

For both the blondes and the brunettes, Bumble and Bumble’s Styling Lotion is a dream. Spray it on to your towel dried hair and then style as usual. It helps protect your hair from heat damage, helps to build a bit of body and even has a nourishing moisturizer in it.

L’oréal has a great line of shampoos and conditioners called EverPure Color Care and it is great for anyone with colour treated hair. This was my go-to before going blonde. The products are all sulphate free and smell fantastic. My personal favourites are the EverPure Color Care & Volume shampoo and conditioner.
